This town, where beytuturab is located, used to be owned by three landowners (ağa), one of them a Turkish man, the other two were Christian Arabs. The Nusayris, who own this land now, used to work as farm laborers for the landowners. They cultivated the landowners' lands and produced silk for them. The family members of the landowners used the village as their summer place. This was the great time for the children with different cultures to come together, learn about each other and have fun together. The old people, now, remember those days happily and miss those moments. One really wishes to be living at that time when listening.
The landowners started to sell their lands to the laborers and immigrate to Antakya , Lebanoon and Latin American countries in the 1950s because of different reasons. At the end of the ‘60s the last lands were sold to the local people. However, the landowners and their children visit this village especially in summer time and have some time with their old laborers. Solaman Feriz (85) still picks up figs from the gardens and takes them in a basket made of reed to his former landowner to down town where he lives and presents it saying; this is your share, master . Please accept it.
The big majority of the male population works in Saudi Arabia or European countries. People also their lives out of olive trees and farming. Trading and shop keeping in Antakya has become an important sector for the local people. Studying at universities has also boomed since 1990s. |
